Do you have a bed that is good for a side/back/front sleeper?

Absolutely. Your sleeping position plays a major role in finding the perfect mattress for you.

  • Side sleepers often prefer a softer feel to cushion shoulders and hips.
  • Back sleepers generally benefit from medium to firm support to keep the spine aligned.
  • Stomach sleepers typically need a firmer mattress to prevent sinking too much.

While you can use this as a general guide, everyone has their individual needs when it comes to sleep. We recommend trying our online Sleep Selector, a simple quiz that will steer you in the right direction to a bed that fits your budget and your needs.

Looking for a more personal touch? Visit your local bed specialists in-store and try our free Sleepmap technology, where we can profile your unique sleeping position for the best scientific bed match, tailoring to your individual sleep needs.

Which bed or mattress is the best?

When it comes to the perfect bed, there's no one-size-fits-all answer - every person's sleep needs are unique, and it depends on how you sleep and what you need. Some people love the cloud-like softness of a plush mattress, while others need firmer support.

Our premium Sleepyhead beds are designed to provide the best in comfort, durability, and support, so the best bed is the one that gives you the perfect night's sleep. Find your perfect match by taking our quick and easy Sleep Selector quiz, or try our free in-store Sleepmap technology to get scientifically matched to the ideal bed for your body.

Which mattresses are good for your health?

A good mattress should support healthy spinal alignment, reduce pressure points, and help with temperature regulation. Look for options with ergonomic support layers, breathable materials, and pressure-relieving foams or springs. Many of our mattresses are designed with these features to promote restorative sleep.

Do you have a bed that is good for my back?

If back pain is a concern, look for a mattress with zoned support, meaning it’s firmer in key areas (like the lower back) and softer where you need pressure relief (like shoulders and hips).

Medium-firm mattresses (Comfort Levels 5) tend to be a popular choice for back support, but the right one depends on your body and sleep habits.

While all of our mattresses offer varying levels of support, we have composed a collection of beds for ‘Better Backs’ – supported by New Zealand Chiropractors for excellence in postural support.

Can an old bed cause back pain?

An unsupportive or worn-out mattress can contribute to back pain. If your mattress is sagging, has springs poking out of it, is too soft, or too firm for your sleep style, it might be time to upgrade. The right mattress should support your spine’s natural curve, reducing pain and improving sleep quality.

How tall are your beds and mattresses?

Our Sleepyhead mattresses are proudly hand-made in New Zealand, and their height varies depending on the type of bed base you use and the thickness of the materials used in your mattress. If you're considering which bed to buy, remember to consider the size of the room and your mobility needs.

While some variation may occur, our Sleepyhead mattresses are built according to the following size guide:

  • Single Mattress: 91 x 188cm
  • Long Single Mattress: 91 x 203cm
  • King Single Mattress: 107 x 203cm
  • Double Mattress: 137 x 188cm
  • Long Double Mattress: 137 x 203cm
  • Queen Mattress: 153 x 203cm
  • King Mattress: 167 x 203cm
  • Super King Mattress: 183 x 203cm
  • California King Mattress: 203 x 203cm

Are all of your beds and mattresses the same length?

Bed lengths can vary depending on the size of the mattress you choose. For taller sleepers, we recommend opting for larger bed sizes, such as Long Double, Queen, King, Super King or California King.

While there may be some variations, our Sleepyhead mattresses adhere to the following size guide:

  • Single Mattress: 91 x 188cm
  • Long Single Mattress: 91 x 203cm
  • King Single Mattress: 107 x 203cm
  • Double Mattress: 137 x 188cm
  • Long Double Mattress: 137 x 203cm
  • Queen Mattress: 153 x 203cm
  • King Mattress: 167 x 203cm
  • Super King Mattress: 183 x 203cm
  • California King Mattress: 203 x 203cm

How expensive are your beds?

Bed prices depend on factors like size, materials, and technology. A basic mattress starts at a few hundred dollars, while premium options with advanced support and cooling technology can go higher.

Don't want to pay for everything today? No worries. At BedsRus, we offer various payment options and interest-free offers, allowing you to sleep now and pay later.

Which mattresses do hotels use?

Hotels typically go for medium-firm mattresses with a plush top, designed to balance comfort and support for a wide range of sleepers. Many luxury hotels use premium Sleepyhead beds, such as our Sanctuary Midnight or Sanctuary After Dark Royal ranges, or similar high-quality mattresses that offer durability with a touch of indulgence. Want that hotel-sleep feel at home? We have options that bring that same level of premium comfort to your bedroom.

Will my mattress hold its shape?

Our Sleepyhead beds and mattresses are crafted with world-class technology and go through rigorous testing to ensure they provide the right balance of comfort and support. From premium foams to durable spring systems, every layer is designed to hold its shape and keep you comfortable, night after night. And for added security, all of our beds and mattresses come with either a 5 year or 10 year warranty.

To get even more out of your mattress, a supportive base, mattress protector, and a clean sleep environment will prolong its life and help it keep its shape. With that in mind, it is recommended that you replace your mattress every 7 – 10 years to ensure your sleep environment is supportive and healthy.

Bed Bases

What kind of bed bases do you have available?

While you can buy our mattresses on their own, many of our beds are sold as an ensemble - that means a matching mattress and base designed to work together. Pairing your mattress with a quality base can help extend its lifespan and support your sleep more effectively.

We also offer a range of specialty bed bases designed to maximise your bedroom space and enhance your sleep.

Whether you need a classic ensemble base, a storage base for extra space, or an adjustable base for custom comfort, there’s an option to suit your needs.

What is a slatted bed base?

A slatted bed base is designed with wooden or metal slats that run across the frame to support your mattress. The gaps between the slats allow for better airflow, keeping your mattress fresh while providing flexible support. Solid slats offer a firmer feel, while sprung slats add a touch of bounce for extra comfort. Slatted bases work best with foam, hybrid, and pocket spring mattresses, but always check compatibility to ensure the right support.

What is an adjustable bed base?

An adjustable bed base lets you raise or lower different sections of your bed, customising your sleep position at the push of a button. Whether you're looking for better spinal support, relief from snoring, or pure comfort for reading or watching TV, an adjustable base takes relaxation to the next level. Pair it with a compatible mattress, and you've got a bed that moves with you, providing you with the most personalised sleep imaginable.

Which mattresses work with an adjustable bed base?

Not all mattresses are designed to bend and flex. Explore our selection of adjustable-friendly mattresses that are specifically designed to adapt to movement while maintaining support.

Which type of bed base is the best?

Everyone's perfect sleep is different. The 'best' bed base depends on a range of factors including how you sleep, the mattress you have, and what feels right for you.

  • Our standard ensemble bases provide a solid, even foundation for sturdy support.
  • Storage bases help maximise space with built-in drawers or compartments.
  • Adjustable bases let you customise your sleep position for ultimate comfort.
  • Slatted bases offer breathability and a firmer feel.

Not sure which one’s right for you? Visit our team of sleep experts in-store today - we're always happy to help you find the perfect base to match your sleep style.

Do you have Afterpay available?

Yes – our website has Afterpay available on purchases under $1,500.

Due to the nature of our individually owned and operated stores, not all stores offer Afterpay in store – however, they may offer one of our many alternative payment options.

Do you offer SuperGold Card?

Yes — our stores offer a 15% discount off the Recommended Retail Price (RRP) upon presentation of your SuperGold Card in-store. Please note that this offer excludes Elements Wave and Wonderest bed and mattress ranges. This offer is also not valid in conjunction with any other offers or discounts.

Mattress Care

Can a mattress be cleaned?

Absolutely! Regular cleaning helps keep your mattress fresh and in great condition. Use a vacuum with an upholstery attachment to remove dust and debris, and spot-clean any spills with a mild detergent and warm water.

Avoid soaking your mattress - too much moisture can lead to damage. A mattress protector is a great way to prevent stains and keep your bed feeling brand new.

Can a mattress be flipped?

It depends on the type of mattress you have. Some mattresses are double-sided and can be flipped to extend their lifespan, while others (like zoned-support designs) are made to be used on one side only. If flipping isn’t an option, rotating your mattress every few months can help even out wear and keep it comfortable for longer. If you're unsure whether your mattress can be flipped, ask the friendly team at your local BedsRus store - we're always happy to help.

Can a mattress get mould?

Yes, if exposed to excessive moisture or poor ventilation, mattresses can develop mould. To prevent this, we recommend using a breathable mattress protector, ensuring your room has good airflow, and avoiding placing your mattress directly on the floor. If you suspect mould, it’s best to address the issue quickly - some cases may require replacing the mattress for health reasons.

When should my mattress be replaced?

A high-quality mattress should last 7-10 years, but if you’re waking up with aches or noticing lumps, exposed springs or sagging, it might be time for an upgrade. Over time, mattresses naturally lose their support, and replacing yours can make a huge difference in your sleep quality.

Are mattresses recyclable?

In most cases, many parts of a mattress - such as the metal springs, foam, and fabric - can be recycled or repurposed, while some products (such as our Elements Wave Mattresses) are especially designed to be recycled. Check with your local recycling centre to see if they accept mattresses, or look for dedicated mattress recycling programs. It’s a more sustainable way to dispose of an old bed and keep it out of landfill.

Can mattresses be donated?

If your mattress is still in good condition (no stains, rips, or major wear), some charities and shelters may accept it. However, donation guidelines vary, so it’s always best to check with local organisations first.

Can my old mattress go to the tip?

Yes, but many waste facilities charge a fee for mattress disposal. Before taking it to the tip, consider recycling or donation options - it’s often a more cost-effective and eco-friendly solution.

Can I put my old mattress in a skip/dumpster?

Most skip and waste collection services don’t allow mattresses due to their size and materials. Even if they do, it’s worth checking the costs - skip bin companies often charge based on weight, and mattresses can absorb a lot of water when left outside, making them unexpectedly heavy and more expensive to dispose of. To avoid surprise fees, check with your local council or waste provider for bulk collection or recycling options instead.

Manufacturing

How are your beds made?

Great sleep starts with great craftsmanship. BedsRus are proud suppliers of premium, New Zealand-made Sleepyhead beds and mattresses.

Our partners at Sleepyhead employ advanced manufacturing techniques to ensure high-quality bed production. At their purpose built plant in Ohinewai, they utilize cutting-edge German technology to produce high-quality foam that is designed to be cleaner and greener, ensuring a healthier night’s sleep for you and a better future for the planet.

This process not only enhances the quality of the foam but also ensures that the air released back into the environment is cleaner than when it entered the plant.

Where are your beds made?

Sleepyhead beds are proudly made in New Zealand, supporting local jobs and communities. Every mattress is crafted with care, ensuring you get the best in comfort, quality, and durability - because nothing beats a Kiwi-made bed.

Are your mattresses double-sided?

Some mattresses are designed to be flipped, while others offer specialised comfort layers on one side only. If you’re looking for a double-sided option, it's best to check the details of your chosen mattress or ask the friendly team at your local BedsRus store to find the perfect fit for your needs.

Which of your mattresses contain fibreglass?

None. Sleepyhead mattresses are made without fiberglass, so you can rest easy knowing your bed is safe, comfortable, and free from unwanted surprises. Instead of using harsh flame retardants, Sleepyhead prioritises safer alternatives - because your well-being always comes first.

How long do your mattresses last for?

A high-quality mattress should support you for years to come. While the lifespan of a mattress depends on how well it’s cared for, Sleepyhead beds are designed to stand the test of time. All beds and mattresses available from BedsRus come with either a 5 year or 10 year warranty, so you can rest easy.

If you're looking for more tips on how to make your bed or mattress last longer, regular rotation, a good mattress protector, and a solid foundation will help keep yours in top shape or years to come.

How are your mattresses packaged?

Depending on the mattress, packaging can vary. Some mattresses are delivered in their full form, while others come conveniently boxed for easy transport. If you're unsure, check the details when purchasing or ask in-store at your local BedsRus - we’re always happy to help.

Sleep Habits & Tips

What are some good sleep habits?

A great night's sleep starts with great sleep habits. Try these simple tweaks for a deeper, more restorative night's rest:

  • Stick to a routine: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day (yes, even weekends!) helps regulate your body clock.
  • Create a calming bedtime ritual: Reading, deep breathing, or stretching signals to your body that it's time to wind down.
  • Limit screen time before bed: Blue light from phones and TVs can mess with melatonin production, making it harder to drift off.
  • Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet: A clutter-free, sleep-friendly space makes all the difference.
Invest in a quality mattress and pillow - The right support means better sleep and better mornings.

Can good sleep help with weight loss?

Yes - there is growing evidence that quality sleep supports a healthy metabolism and balances hormones like ghrelin and leptin, which control hunger. When you're sleep-deprived, your body craves more high-calorie foods, making it harder to maintain a healthy weight. Prioritizing rest is just as important as diet and exercise when it comes to overall well-being.

Can good sleep help lower blood pressure?

Yes, your sleep quality can have an impact on your blood pressure. Deep sleep helps your body regulate stress hormones and keep your heart healthy. When you don’t get enough rest, your body stays in a heightened state, which can lead to increased blood pressure over time. A solid night’s sleep is one of the simplest ways to help give your heart the care it deserves.

How does good sleep affect mental health?

Sleep and mental health go hand in hand. A well-rested brain is better at managing emotions, handling stress, and staying focused. Poor sleep has been linked to anxiety, depression, and mood swings - so if you're feeling off, improving your sleep routine could potentially help.

Can good sleep cure anxiety?

While sleep alone isn’t a cure for anxiety, it can play a role in helping to manage stress. A lack of sleep can make anxious thoughts feel even worse, while consistent, deep sleep helps regulate mood and reduce stress hormones. If anxiety is keeping you up at night, try a relaxing bedtime routine or speak with a professional for extra support.

What is the best time to sleep?

The best bedtime depends on your lifestyle and natural body rhythm - but ideally, you should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep and align it with your wake-up time. If you need to be up at 7 AM, try winding down around 9:30 PM to be asleep by 10:30 PM.

Why is it important to get a good night's sleep?

A good night's sleep is the foundation of better energy, mood, and overall health. It helps your body repair itself, boosts immunity, sharpens memory, and even improves skin health. If you're looking for a simple way to feel better each day, start by trying to get a better night's sleep.
